Think creatively!

For many years, clients would tell me that applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) required accepting 2/3 of the SSI payment for at least 2 months. They explained that they were told at the SS interview that their parents were providing “in kind support” of free rent since they had not required rent when they did not have a monthly income at 18 years old.

So these individuals has to return to the SS office after 2 months to submit a rental agreement. Then they would be increase to 100% of the SSI payment.

As my daughter approached 18 years old, I helped her plan a solution to losing 1/3 x 2 months, and having to visit the office twice.

She saved enough money in advance of her 18th birthday that she was able to pay her 1st month rent upon her 18th birthday. The SS representative documented this payment and she was awarded the full SSI payment from her 1st month!
